DEPARTMENT PROGRAMME

Home Economics / Food & Nutrition

Both the lower and upper sec subjects aim to

  • develop students’ understanding of the concepts of nutrition and meal planning.
  • develop students’ understanding of the link between diet and health.
  • develop students’ understanding of the principles of food science.
  • equip students with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions concerning food and nutrition.

Practical cooking assessments are conducted during lessons for all lower secondary students. These hands-on sessions will help the students to learn more about food hygiene, time management and basic culinary skills.

Course work is a higher-order thinking project work that is carried out for all levels. For Sec 1, they focus on Game Creation and Sec 2 on Cold Dessert Creation. For upper sec, students will be taught higher cognitive levels of project work skills like research, planning and decision making before proceeding to produce the final product.

Learning journeys were conducted for lower sec students to food processing factories like Yakult factory and Health Promotion Board – Health Zone are carried out for the lower sec students.

 

Design & Technology

The D&T programme aims to prepare students for design thinking so that they could actively participate in tomorrow’s rapidly changing world.

Lower Secondary students are exposed to basic designing and drawing skills including design appreciation and critique, cultural influences on designs, shape borrowing and SCAMPERing.

Students who wish to pursue the subject in the upper levels would immerse themselves in more in-depth studies of the designing and problem solving rigors using developing technologies. Upper sec students  are also training to use to Tablet PC to assist in their execution of their drawings. They are also taught the workings of mechanisms and basic electronics, and work on simple projects involving such disciplines.

Enrichment courses conducted by external vendor are carried out for upper sec students to improve their sketching and ideation skills.

Learning journeys were conducted for pupils of various levels to the following places to widen their exposure and interest in the subject: Toy Museum, Ikea, and various polytechnics

 

 

Art & Design

The Art curriculum aims

  • to cultivate appreciation of art and design through meaningful art education;
  • enhance ability to identify and solve problems creatively in visual and tactile forms;
  • develop competency in the use of art and design principles, materials and processes;
  • foster self-confidence and a sense of achievement through the practice of art and design;
  • cultivate an inquiring mind, a spirit of experimentation and a passion for art and design.

 

Computer Applications

Computer Applications (CPA) is a skills-based subject offered to Normal Technical classes from Secondary 1 to Secondary 4. The CPA programme aims to prepare our technically-inclined students

to be technologically adept as effective citizens, and to function and contribute effectively in

an increasingly technologically-driven world. It seeks to nurture the students as effective and efficient end-users as well as to understand basic hardware and software operation principles.

Teachers use appropriate generic software and design projects tasks in word processing, desktop publishing, multimedia presentation, graphics and product design in their teaching.

Elements of Business Skills

Elements of Business Skills (EBS) is a skills-based subject offered to Normal Technical classes from Secondary 3 to Secondary 4. The subject aims to equip students with the basic knowledge, skills and values relevant for the new developments in the services sector. The focus is on the development of a range of knowledge and core skills in business and enterprise with particular emphasis on retail, travel and tourism, and hospitality industries.
